Energize your summer

It has been six months since I posted to my blog. I have been so busy that I have not had time to write. But I am back again and will try to make an effort to post regularly.

Spring came and went. Summer starts this weekend. I hope you are making plans for activities that keep you energized both mentally and physically. It is super important to fuel yourself for those activities whether it is hiking on the mountains or a day at the beach. Here are some tips to eating right during the day so your energy level stays up:

1. Consider how long the activity takes, where it takes place, how you will get there and how long it takes to get to the activity. You may need to bring food to eat while you travel to the activity, during the activity and/or after the activity.

2. Remember carbohydrates is your number one source of energy fuel. You will want to eat carbs before your activity so you feel energized during the activity. Carbs include fruit, vegetables, beans, bread, pasta, cereals and dairy products. Fat also provide us fuel but it is not as efficient as carbs. Good fats include avocado, nuts, seeds, and olive oil.

3. Consider how strenous the event is. If it is a day at the beach and you will be sunbathing, then a healthy salad and cold soup might be enough. For this activity, make sure you bring lots of water to stay hydrated and load up on sunscreen. But if your activity is a full day of hiking in the mountains, you will need portable food. My favorite hiking foods are a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole wheat bread, nuts and dried fruit. I also bring several bottles of water and an energy bar or two just in case.

Have a fabulous summer!!!
